I prefer to use gmail system because I can mark any mail as unread if I want to check that subject again. Also, on gmail I can view the mails on same subject under one e mail. These kind of differences makes it easy to follow my e mails on gmail system.
I often email to my friends. Also it is a good way to communicate with my proffessors from different universities, this way I can ask questions and ask for their help when I am working on a difficult topic. The emails I sent to my proffessors are different form the emails I sent to my friends, they are more formal in terms of the usage of language.
